I have 4 years of chronic back pain without relief. Please tell me what medication
I should use?
Thank you for your question.
Medications are usually broken down in the liver to their active form. The liver also breaks down the medication so that it is no longer effective, which is why medications need to be taken as often as they are.
Various individuals have different enzymes in their liver, and different enzymes will breakdown various pain medications. Therefore, some individuals might receive little to no benefit of their pain from their prescribed medication such as morphine.
Oxycodone, Dilauded and Methadone might be metabolized/broken down by various enzymes.
Tests are available which can determine which enzymes are most predominant in ones liver.
Unfortunately, the sensitivity and specificity of these enzymes in breaking down various medications has not been determined completely.
Therefore it is possible that one pain medication might help one individual and not help the next individual.
If you are not experiencing the pain relief to function to your capacity consider asking your doctor to check the enzymes in your liver which might help your physician prescribe a medication which might be most helpful for you
Please talk to your physician prior to using other individuals medications or stopping your medications without your doctors supervision.
Sincerely,
Dr. Madhup Joshi
