I have reflux disease. What can I do to decrease the burning in my chest?
GERD, which stands for Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease, is caused by acid coming up from the stomach into the esophagus because the entrance to the stomach (a ring of muscle called Lower Esophageal Sphincter) isn’t closing tightly enough. Smoking, alcohol, spicy foods and certain medications (including natural products) can relax the LES and cause burning of the esophagus. You should avoid eating any particular substance that increases your heartburn. Try to avoid lying down an hour after eating and avoid eating just before to going to sleep. If you have not had an endoscopy, where your esophagus is examined by a scope, you should talk to your doctor about having this done. Medications such as H2 blockers, Cimetidine, Ranitidine or PPI (proton pump inhibitors) such as Nexium can also offer relief. Please make sure that you discuss this condition thoroughly with your doctor prior to initiating any treatment based upon this information.
