sciatic pain

I’ve been to doctors about my sciatic pain, but all they say is to take pain relievers and do hamstring stretches. I end up taking Tylenol every night. Is there any way to stop the discomfort?

Sciatic pain is defined medically as pain that originates from the spine and goes down the leg beyond the knee. It is usually caused by discs or something pressing against the nerves which supply blood to the legs. Pain that does not go beyond the knee might be caused by spasms of muscles in the buttock region or from tightness of the Piriformis muscle.

An MRI scan is usually performed to determine the cause of the pain. Sometimes injections in the spinal canal can help decrease the pain. Trigger point injections might also help in alleviating pain arising from muscle tightness, but you should first obtain a consultation with a Physiatrist who is able to perform them. Using a Lidocaine patch on your back prior to sleeping, or using a pillow between your legs might also help you sleep with less discomfort.
